The Approach

Work. Then think. Then both at once.

Basketball rewards two things: work and thought. Most training only teaches one.

Tough and Smart Hoops was built on a simple idea — that skill development and basketball IQ aren't separate tracks, they're the same track. Every workout is designed to build not just what a player can do, but how they read the game while doing it.

This isn't a drill mill. Every session is scripted around the individual — where they are, what they need next, and what it will actually take for them to compete at their next level.

Founded in 2009 by John Curran, a four-year varsity letter winner and team captain at John Carroll University, where he helped lead two OAC Conference Championship teams and reached the Sweet Sixteen in back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances.

Coaching RangeJohnny's coaching career spans every level of the game — from scripting individual off-season workouts for NBA and overseas professionals, to serving as a Division I assistant coach responsible for opponent scouting, game planning, and player development through video analysis. That range is exactly what shapes the way he trains: he knows what the top of the game actually demands, and he builds that standard into every player he works with, from youth to college-bound athletes.

Playing CareerBefore coaching, Johnny played four years of varsity basketball at John Carroll University, earning Leadership Awards in his sophomore and senior seasons and Most Improved Player as a junior. He captained the team his senior year and helped lead it to two OAC Conference Championships and consecutive NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen appearances.
